Community Service Project
The Awareness Center is in partnership with the Mustangs on the Move
program to bring yoga and meditation to teens at John Muir High School.
To teach in this program you must fill out an application, including your
availability, and attend a brief training period with Wahe Guru Kaur.
Classes will be offered from 7:00-7:45 am and after school from 3:15-4:15
pm. Working with teenagers is one of the best ways to learn how to teach,
to drop your ego and be fully present in the moment. These wonderful kids
are new to yoga and will definitely keep you on your toes. This program
will begin the end of October. Please see Wahe Guru Kaur for further details.
Mustangs on the Move
Vision: Youths who are safe, productive and joyful — students
whose academic performance is competitive — students who are prepared
for college and life-long learning.
Mustangs on the Move is a collaboration of Pasadena nonprofit organizations,
high school students, and community members working together to provide
after-school programming at John Muir High School in Northwest Pasadena.
The school is located in a commercially blighted area of the community
with few resources for teens. Flintridge Foundation has committed $800,000
in financial and in-kind support over five years to build the infrastructure
that will sustain the collaboration, now an independent nonprofit organization.
This all-volunteer effort to provide extracurricular academic, developmental,
and enrichment activities is the first of its kind on a Pasadena Unified
School District campus.
Since 2003, Mustangs on the Move has offered a wide range of activities:
tutoring; college preparation; scholarship and financial aid information;
art, music and drama classes and job training. New programming is rotated
in on a regular basis. In 2005 the collaboration held its first summer
sessions.
